Smartlipo™ laserlipolysis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which disrupts the fat cells through a thermal and photodisruptive action – heating and shattering the fat cell membrane. The heat of the laser coagulates the underlying vessels which results in less bleeding, bruising, and trauma. All of this translates into a shorter recovery time for the patient. Further, tissue is tightened through bulk thermal heating and tissue coagulation.
Incisions made for the insertion of the cannula are a mere 1 to 2 mm in diameter. Once it is inserted into the area, the cannula is moved in a “back and forth” fanning motion. The laser's aiming beam can be visualized through the skin, allowing the physician to identify the treatment area. As the fibre tip comes in contact with the fat cells it ruptures the cell membranes and releases the fatty oil from the fat cells. The melted fat can then be removed.
The Smartlipo™ procedure permanently destroys the treated fat cells. As a result, in the event more weight is gained, fat deposits will most likely be situated in areas where the procedure was not performed.
Ideal candidates are in good health, close to normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results. If the person has areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then that person is a candidate for laser-assisted lipolysis.
Usually, patients need only one treatment to achieve results. The session may last from 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated. Laserlipolysis is also an ideal choice for “touch ups” and revisions.
